Summary

Pressure sensors measure absolute or relative pressure or pressure changes. The global market for pressure sensors is expected to grow at a steady rate. Major industries using pressure sensors are machine tools, plastics machinery, packaging machines and many other types of machinery. The process industries as well as the automotive sector represent the leading markets for pressure sensors. Other major markets are the building sector, aircraft and shipbuilding, the medical sector as well as all types of professional devices. Household appliances, too, are an important market.

Pressure sensors have become smarter through the introduction of microcontrollers, enabling additional functions and specific applications. MEMS-based pressure sensors are increasingly used in the automotive, medical and building sector. Their accuracy, reliability and performance features are increasing steadily, allowing for lower-cost devices at the same time.

The demand for automotive pressure sensors is expected to grow. They are used for engine control (manifold pressure, barometric pressure, turbocharging), exhaust gas recirculation and clutch pressure control, in air conditioning systems, in tire pressure monitoring systems and in many other applications. The growth for these sensors is stimulated by environmental regulations, increased safety and convenience standards, and a trend towards higher engine efficiency standards.

The process industries, too, are major users of pressure sensors. They have various applications within the oil & gas sector, in refineries, in chemical plants, in power plants, in the pulp & paper industry, in the metal and construction materials sector and in wastewater treatment plants. The trend is towards smarter pressure sensors with self-diagnostic and digital communication capabilities. Many pressure sensors in the process industries must be robust and rugged for use in harsh environments.

In the medical sector, pressure sensors are not only used for devices monitoring blood pressure, but also sleep apnea and respiration, and for other professional devices. The building sector, too, has a high and growing demand for pressure sensors.

Over the years, pressure sensors have evolved in terms of sensitivity, reliability, compactness and versatility, as a consequence of ever-growing need for enhanced technology.

Conclusion

The global market for pressure sensors was impacted by the recent economic recession during the years 2008-09. With the crisis hitting all major OEM and end-user industries, growth in the market remained relatively flat during the period. However as demand surged in 2010, mainly from the automotive, office, building and industrial markets, the strong pre-crisis growth level has re-emerged for these markets.
